A foreign national marrying a Bangladeshi citizen, or two foreign nationals marrying in Bangladesh, can register the marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1872. Preparation of foreign documents is where most delays happen, so start early.

Typical documents for the foreign party
- Valid passport and a copy of the visa
- Proof of being free to marry (single-status or no-impediment certificate, or divorce/death certificate), usually issued by the home country or its embassy
- Documents in English or translated into English or Bangla and, where required, attested
- Passport-size photographs
Documents for the Bangladeshi party
- National ID card and birth certificate
- Proof of status where applicable
- Photographs
Process
The notice, objection period, declaration and registration steps are the same as for any special marriage. Because the foreign party must remain in Bangladesh for the declaration, plan visa validity around the objection period.
Using the certificate abroad
Your home country or embassy may ask for the certificate to be attested by Bangladeshi authorities and translated. Check their requirement before you travel.
